    Equation - number sentence with an equals sign

                    4 + 6 = 10

                    10 – 6 = 4

                    4 x 6 = 24

                    24 ÷ 4 = 6

     

    Multiplication - number operation that is more efficient (faster) than repeated addition

                    4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 6 x 4

     

    Multiply - a math operation that uses factors to find the product

                    4 x 6 = 24

     

    Factors - in a multiplication sentence, the number of groups and the number in each group

                    4 x 6 = 24

     

    Product - answer to a multiplication equation

    6 x 4 = 24

    Equal Groups - groups that are the same size (have the same amount)

                   

     

    Division - one large group broken into smaller equal groups

                    24 ÷ 4 = 6

     

    Divide - a math operation that breaks the total into smaller equal groups

                    24 ÷ 4 = 6 - -> the total of 24 is broken into 4 equal groups of 6

     

    Quotient - answer to a division equation

    24 ÷ 4 = 6

     

    Unknown - what you work to solve in a number sentence

    (The “missing” factor or quantity in multiplication or division)

                    4 + 6 = ___                          10 – ___ = 4

                   

    4 x 6 = ___                          24 ÷ ___ = 6

     

    Commutative Property - factors can switch around and the total stays the same (in addition and multiplication sentences ONLY)

     

    Rotate - switch from horizontal to vertical OR from vertical to horizontal

    Parentheses - show how to make groups in an equation, the operation inside gets done first

    (The symbols ( ) used around a fact or numbers within an equation)

    Tape Diagram - a drawing that represents number relationships

    (A method for modeling problems)

     

     

    Sum - answer to an addition equation

    6 + 4 = 10

     

    Difference - answer to a subtraction equation

    10 – 6 = 4

     

    Distributive Property – break apart an equation into two smaller equations with one common factor

     (1 x 4) + (5 x 4) = 6 x 4  - -> In this equation, the common factor is 4,

                                                          and the 1 and the 5 are added together

    Stamina - how long I can work and do my best without getting tired

                    Example: This week I will work my hardest for 15 minutes straight.

    Even – A number that can be divided by 2

    2, 4, 6, 8, 10

     

    Odd - having one left over as a remainder when divided by two

    1, 3, 5, 7, 9

     

    Multiple – Naming multiples of 10 – 10, 20, 30, 4

    A number that can be divided by another number without a remainder.  15, 20, are multiples of five.
