Academic Support
Elementary Academic Support: MTSS Model
At Belleville-Henderson, our Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) ensures that every elementary student receives the instruction and intervention they need to succeed in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. The MTSS framework uses data-driven decision-making, collaboration, and targeted supports to meet students where they are — academically and socially.
What Is MTSS?
MTSS is a proactive approach that provides tiered levels of support based on student needs:
-
Tier 1: High-quality, differentiated instruction for all students in the classroom
-
Tier 2: Targeted small-group instruction for students needing additional support
-
Tier 3: Intensive individualized interventions for students requiring more focused instruction
Progress is monitored regularly so that instruction can be adjusted quickly and effectively.
The Flooding Model at Belleville Henderson
To provide the strongest foundation in reading, writing, and math, Belleville-Henderson uses a flooding model during daily academic support blocks.
-
Each day, for 90 minutes, multiple support staff (2–3 interventionists or specialists) join the classroom teacher during ELA or Math instruction.
-
This “flooding” of support allows for flexible small groups, reduced student-teacher ratios, and targeted instruction based on current student data.
-
Students receive exactly the level of help they need — whether that’s reinforcement, enrichment, or intensive skill-building.
-
Staff work collaboratively to ensure all students are progressing toward grade-level standards.
This approach ensures that every child receives personalized, high-quality instruction in core academic areas every day.
