What’s Changing:

  • The Portrait of a Graduate is now the foundation for graduation in New York State.

  • Regents Exams will no longer be required for a diploma (phasing out by 2029–30).

  • Students will show mastery through multiple pathways — projects, portfolios, or performance tasks.

What This Means for Families:

  • Your child’s education will focus more on critical thinking, communication, creativity, and citizenship.

  • Schools will offer more ways for students to demonstrate learning and success beyond standardized tests.

  • Graduation will still require academic rigor and 22 credits, but with greater flexibility and personal relevance.

What You Can Do:

  • Talk with your child about their goals and strengths.

  • Encourage curiosity, reflection, and problem-solving.

  • Stay informed through school updates as changes roll out through 2029.
