CSE Process
Committee on Special Education (CSE) Process
The Committee on Special Education (CSE) is responsible for identifying and supporting school-age students (ages 5–21) who may have disabilities that affect their learning. The CSE works closely with families and school staff to ensure each student receives the services and supports they need to succeed.
1. Referral
A student may be referred to the CSE for an evaluation by a parent, teacher, or other school professional when there are concerns about learning, behavior, or development.
All referrals must be made in writing to the CSE Chairperson.
2. Evaluation
With parent consent, the school conducts a comprehensive evaluation to better understand the student’s strengths and needs.
Evaluations may include academic testing, psychological assessment, speech and language evaluation, and other assessments as needed.
3. Eligibility Meeting
After evaluations are complete, the CSE meets with the parents to review the results and determine if the student qualifies for special education services under state and federal guidelines.
4. Individualized Education Program (IEP) Development
If the student is found eligible, the CSE develops an Individualized Education Program (IEP) that outlines specific goals, services, and supports tailored to the student’s needs.
5. Implementation
The IEP is put into action by the student’s teachers and service providers. The school ensures all staff working with the student understand the supports and goals in the plan.
6. Annual Review
The CSE meets at least once each year to review the student’s progress and make any necessary changes to the IEP.
7. Reevaluation
Every three years, the student must be reevaluated to determine continued eligibility and to review educational progress.
Our goal is to work collaboratively with families to create supportive, inclusive learning environments where all students can reach their full potential.
