High School Health!

In this class you will learn the importance of good health practices and the impact they have on your life.  Your will be aware that your actions affect your personal health and well being, as well as the well being of those around you.  The course is designed to prepare students to lead healthy lives long after they have left the classroom by providing tools and strategies to promote positive behaviors and healthy lifestyle choices.

     Introducation to Health & Wellness
In this unit, students will find out how their lifestyle affects how they feel now and in the future.  They will learn that they can choose a lifestyle that will keep them feeling fit, healthy, energetic and happy.  Not all influences on your health are controllable, therefore, studens will learn how heredity, environment and behavior can influence the three areas of health: physical health, mental health and social health.  Student's will also examine how their self-esteem and self-concept can influence their health decisions.
    Nutrition Healthy Cooking
The high school health classes participated in 5 cooking labs! They learned how to cook heart-healthy meals.  The meals consisted of chicken quesadillas, pancakes, Hoy-Sin Chicken Stir-Fry, and breakfast wraps. It was delish!
    Mental Health
This unit helps students understand stress and learn about ways to manage it (Student's will learn YOGA 101, see side panel for description).  The unit focuses on various elements of building self-esteem such as appearance, values, self-concept, success and confidence, personality and character traits.
    bReproduction and Parenting
The Baby Think it Over Program will be held in the month of January.  Student's will sign up to take the baby home one of the two weekends:

The objective of this program is to help teenagers realize that the demands of parenting are numerous and occur 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I ask that you support and assist your child in the care of the electronic baby, but please insist that your child be the primary caregiver of this baby. The only way the objective of this project can be met is for the students to take on the full responsibility of parenting, including getting up in the night to care for the baby and giving up social events in order to be a hands on parent.

    Drugs and Alcohol
This unit deals with the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.  We examine habits ranging from occasional use to addiction.  Students will learn how smoking contributes to serious illnesses and how they can commit to a tobacco-free lifestyle.  This unit also promotes alternatives to drug use by examing peer pressure situations and decision-making.
