• What is Agricultural Education?

Agricultural Education prepares students for successful careers and a lifetime of informed choices in the global agriculture, food, fiber and natural resource systems.

Agricultural Education can be broken down into three parts.  Instruction, or the time students spend learning in school.  Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE),  where students learn by doing outside of the classroom by volunteering, working for someone or owning their own agricultural business.  FFA , a national youth organization that focuses on premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.

Instruction: Students are able to take a variety of agricultural education classes including agricultural science, animal science, aquaculture and horticulture, environmental science and agricultural economics and engineering for high school or college credit.

SAE: Students are able to apply the knowledge they learn in the classroom through real world experiences.  Popular SAE projects at Belleville Henderson include raising rabbit, chickens and pigs, working on a farm, managing the school greenhouse and animal lab or working in food service.

FFA: All students have the opportunity to become a member of and participate in chapter, state and national FFA activities.  The Belleville Henderson FFA Chapter has several annual activities including the community agricultural fair, citrus sale, Mother’s Day plant sale, souperbowl of caring, and Syracuse Crunch game.  On a state and national level students can participate in career development events (CDEs) where they put the knowledge they have gained in the classroom and through their SAE to the test in team challenges and individual activities, that someone in that agricultural career would face.
