              Banana Splits News
                                       
    Welcome back to another school year!  Permission slips have been sent out and will need to be sent back by Friday, September 12th.   Banana Splits groups will be starting the week of 9/15-9/19.  My intentions are to update news at the end of each week, in regards to the activities we completed.

    For each group, each week begins with a "sharing time" in which all students have an opportunity to discuss their personal stories or personal reactions to family experiences over the past week.
     
    1st/2nd grade group (meets on Monday's):
    Week of 9/15- Group did not meet due to school closing
    Week of 9/22- Introductions, shared backgrounds, reviewed confidentiality rules and made bananas for our banana tree (Each banana represents a child in the middle of Mom and Dad that have peeled away  from one another)
    Week of 9/29- Finished bananas and began our individualized Divorce books (recollection of our story and reactions)- Began the Me Page
    Week of 10/6- Finished the Me page of our Divorce books
     
    3rd grade (meets on Thursday's):
    Week of 9/18- Introductions, shared backgrounds, reviewed confidentiality rules, and made bananas for our banana tree (Each banana represents a child in the middle of Mom and Dad that have peeled away  from one another)
    Week of 9/25- Finished bananas and listened to the song "Divorce" by Dan Conley.  This song is from an album entitled "If You Believe in You" that we will be using a lot throughout the year.
    Week of 10/2- Brainstormed the major themes of divorce that we heard in the song, and began a discussion of feelings (how they start, where they start, how they progress, types of feelings)
    Week of 10/9- Reviewed feelings and used feelings chart to identify all of the feelings that are experienced with separation/ divorce.  Students discussed individual examples of situations that brought on a feeling.
     
    4th grade group (meets on Friday's):

    Week of 10/9- Listened to the song "And I Need a Lot of Love" by Dan Conley.  Discussion on how families show you they love you, and discussion on visitation schedules.
     
    5th/6th grade group ( meets on Friday's):
    Week of 9/19- Introductions, shared backgrounds, reviewed confidentiality rules, and made bananas for our banana tree (Each banana represents a child in the middle of Mom and Dad that have peeled away  from one another)
    Week of 9/25- Finished bananas and brainstormed ideas for major projects that will cover the school year.
    Week of 10/3- Narrowed down ideas for projects, students will develop a children's book on divorce, a game on divorce, and pictures will be taken of all groups throughout the year, with the focus to develop a Banana Splits scrapbook.  The ultimate goal is to have a "Banana Splits" table at the Health and Wellness fair scheduled for spring 2009 to share our knowledge and experience with divorce.
    Week of 10/10- Began writing our book "The Three Little Kittens that lost their Dad".
